Indoor Activities For You and Your Carer
Summer is well and truly over, as we enter the blustery and rainy days of autumn. When it’s more difficult or simply less appealing to get out of doors, it’s good to have a wealth of things to occupy your time with at home.
If you’re wondering what types of things you might do to pass the colder, wetter months, here are some ideas to get you thinking! Some you can do on your own, or some may be better with your homecare assistant.
Healthy Activities
Healthcare at home is all the more important when spending longer periods indoors. Making up for the absence of nature and fresh air is key, both for general health and mental well-being. You and your carer might want a variety of options to just do that.
For The Mind
There are so many ways to keep the mind healthy, stimulated, and dynamic, from puzzles to games like mahjong, chess, and Go. If you don’t already know how to play, learning is good for the mind too. Incidentally, you could learn a language or a craft. Read a nonfiction book and learn about a new topic.
Other activities good for a healthy mind include creative and mindful ones. Mindfulness and meditation can help uncover inner peace in day-to-day life. Creative tasks stimulate a whole hemisphere of our mind and bring us joy. Things like pottery and painting are good creative tasks.
For The Body
Even if mobility is not your strong suit, there are always ways to exercise our bodies to the best of our abilities, keeping them as healthy as possible. There are a wealth of exercise classes out there for all capabilities. You can find tons of free instructional videos on Youtube, from seated exercises to Tai Chi and Qigong.
Fun Activities
Fun activities are arguably just as important as ‘healthy’ ones, especially when stuck indoors. If we don’t maintain a happy state living locked in, the whole experience can seem more like a sentence than a staycation.
Why not crack open a board game or card game? There are so many to choose from that you can play either on your own or with your carer. More and more seem to be created every day!
Alternatively, there is the old reliable television. There are so many choices of streaming services these days, you can view almost anything with the click of a button. From old classic films to modern drama series, there’s something to fit every mood.
Outside The Box Activities
Whether fun or healthy, some indoor activities can seem mundane and uninteresting after a while. It’s good for the mind to be stimulated by new things, presented with new challenges and information, and excited and switched on by the unfamiliar.
What’s a unique hobby or interest that has always appealed to you but you’ve never tried? Stargazing with a telescope? Finding a pen pal? Taxidermy? Watchmaking? Coin collecting? Find something that resonates with you. What’s stopping you from giving it a go?
