5 Skills and Qualities That Make an Exceptional Care Worker
Care work is an incredibly rewarding, yet at times, challenging profession.
Providing care and support for those who need it is an essential role in our society and can greatly improve the quality of life of vulnerable people.
While this job is extremely rewarding, the responsibilities it comes with mean that it requires a special kind of person. Here are the 5 skills and qualities needed to become an exceptional care worker:
1) Patience
One of the most important qualities of a care worker is patience.
Your client is likely facing a vulnerability that makes carrying out tasks or conversations difficult, so it is important to be patient and reassure them that they don’t need to rush. Rushing them will only cause your client to become frustrated, which could lead to an injury.
2) Sense of humour
Laughter truly is the best medicine. Many of the clients you will be working with will be living alone or struggling with health problems so will need some cheering up.
Making them smile even for a short period of time can do a world of good to both their physical and mental well-being.
3) Resilience
Sometimes, your clients’ frustration with their own difficulties and health problems may lead them to seem snappy or unpredictable.
While they most likely appreciate what you are doing for them, it can be difficult for them to always remain positive and upbeat and their frustration may be indirectly taken out on you.
With unpredictable shift work and long hours, resilience is a key quality needed for care work. Without high resilience, you’re more likely to feel burned out and mistakes are more likely to happen.
4) Empathy
Compassion and empathy are essential qualities for a care worker. Not only do you need to understand a person’s feelings but also relate and completely put yourself in their shoes.
This will make your job easier and more rewarding. You will be able to feel the joy when a client’s family member visits or the loneliness they might feel on their birthday when they live alone, meaning you know exactly what to do to make them feel better.
5) Communication
Care workers regularly work with clients from varied backgrounds with diverse health issues, which may impair their ability to communicate.
Strong communication skills are vital to ensure all of your clients’ needs are met.
